Installing a Bathtub in your HDB Flat

Installing a Bathtub in your HDB Flat

Most of us dream of steeping in the bathtub of our 3-story mansion while staring out of a window overlooking a majestic scenery. Unfortunately, while it may be some time before we get the mansion of our dreams, you may be wondering if you can recreate your bubbly bathroom in a HDB flat. And the answer is yes! Nonetheless, there are a few things you should know and consider before attempting to fully re-construct your bathroom.

HDB Renovation Conditions

Firstly, the weight of your bathtub and supporting structure cannot exceed 150kg in a square meter. So, you may have to opt for a slightly more compact bathtub but that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to compromise on the look of it! Do also note that if the installation requires hacking floors or walls then a permit is required. Bathtubs can also only be installed in the designated bathroom space in each home.

Secondly, consider the bathtub’s size, amount of bathroom space and location of drainage pipe. These may not be a problem if you’re constructing your bathroom from scratch but if you’re looking to just install a bathtub, you may need to re-position or choose another bathtub that suits the current layout of your bathroom.

Built-in vs Standing Bathtubs

The choice is really up to you. There is a wide variety of each kind of bathtub that you can choose from, so you won’t have to worry that one looks more aesthetically pleasing than the other. Generally, free standing bathtubs are easier to install and maintain but may also be heavier so it might be a hassle to  clean. They may also take up more bathroom space. Hence, you should consider the size and layout of your bathroom before making a choice.

Cost of Installation

The bathtub itself can vary substantially in terms of price, based on factors like size and material. As for renovation and installation, it usually ranges between $1,500 to $2,000 but this is just a rough gauge.

Choosing a Bathtub

Apart from the built-in and standing bathtub mentioned earlier, you can also consider a corner bathtub which is a space-saving alternative to larger bathtubs. This is also a safer option if you have young children and are worried about any cuts on sharp surfaces.

A Japanese ofuro might be something you want to consider if you like the Onsen baths of Japan. The wooden material lends a natural look to your bathroom and helps to brighten it up. The high walls also ensures maximum submersion so you won’t have to worry about your upper body being exposed. However, this also means that it is not a very suitable choice for children.

A bathtub design you don't see very often is this walk-in bathtub. This is a good choice if you don't enjoy having to hop over the bathtub every time you wish to take a bath. If you have seniors living in your home then this is also a practical choice for them. The mini door is completely sealed when closed to prevent leakage. These bathtubs also come with a seat so you can comfortably read your book while soaking.
