Add Character to your Bathroom - Introduce Mosaic and Patterned Tiles

Bathrooms are really important in any home renovation. However, it is usually designed to look as minimalistic as possible, with colours that swing to either side of the brightness scale.

However, it is time for a revival!

We want more people to inject a little more excitement into the bathroom, with hopes that it will also inspire bathroom deep-thinkers to a eureka moment.

How can you do that? By looking into vintage style-style mosaic tiles or Peranakan-inspired tiles. These are classics that will stand the test of time and match with almost any decor or theme.

We have accumulated some of what our interior designers have created below.

Patterns on Bathroom Walls

When introducing patterned tiles into the bathroom, pick a wall you want to use as a display. Having these tiles on only one section of the bathroom creates visual interest. Balance it with a neutral, single-coloured surrounding.

In this bathroom, designed by AMP Design Co, you see Peranakan-inspired tiles lined on one wall. The burst of colour changes the atmosphere of the space from sterile to stylish.

When introducing patterned tiles, it is important to consider the surroundings. Here we have an off white template, contrasted by deep grey flooring. The patterned tile picks these colours in the design, splashing a turquoise to strike the eyes.

Just like the Sandy Beach

If you have visited beach resorts, you’ll realise that most of their interior designs reflect its natural surroundings, particularly the sandy beach.

You can apply that to your bathroom too.

You don’t have to adorn the whole wall with patterned tiles. Just a strip, like what Starry Homestead has designed for the bathroom at 712 Tampines St 71 here, is sufficient to make a statement.

As this bathroom is a little larger than usual, there is space for a full-length washbasin with a vanity unit. To make this area feel more upscale, the same tiles used at the bath stall is used as the backsplash.

Black and White Vintage

Vintage is celebrated because it is timeless. Most importantly, it is very much in fashion now. Stick to black and white mosaic pieces, and it can pretty much match with anything, even if you decide to have a neon bathroom.

This simplistic bathroom designed by Yew Interior Design for 291 Choa Chu Kang uses hexagonal mosaic pieces that are not very pricey yet luxuriously expressive.

You don’t need glossy, bright tiles to create a statement. Here, the WC unit and washbasin stand out from black and white tapestry.

Patchwork Artist

If you are not into having tiny mosaic tiles lined up in your bathroom but like the angular designs, you have the option to get tiles with mosaic patterns instead.

In this Jurong East 21 bathroom designed by T&T Design Artisan, each tile is a snapshot of popular mosaic design styles. Put together, it looks a lot like patchwork blankets grandmothers used to make for their grandchildren.

Who knew introducing a little piece of family heritage into the bathroom would look so gorgeous!

Beautifully Intricate

If you love patterned tiles of mosaics, you don’t have to limit it to a statement wall, go all out - it is your home anyway.

We love what DISTINCTidENTITY has done to this bathroom at X-10 The Mezzo is flooded with amply natural light from the large sliding windows.

There are two types of patterned tiles introduced here, organic and inorganic patterns. The only rule here is to keep the material and colour consistent.

With so many patterns on the walls, the walls and furnishings mustn't compete for attention when it comes to patterns and designs. Stick to a neutral colour so that the effort put in to make the patterned walls stand out achieves its purpose.

Patterned tiles and mosaics are highly recommended Singaporean bathrooms. Even if it does not gel with the home when it comes to designs, it is still okay because bathrooms are stand-alone rooms.
